NEPRA Opens Door to Digital Payments for Regulatory Fees in Major Policy Shift

ISLAMABAD

Pakistan’s power regulator has approved digital payment methods for regulatory fees under a new amendment aimed at modernizing financial transactions and accelerating digital adoption within the energy sector.

The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) amended its regulations to formally allow online transfers, digital banking channels, payment cards and QR code-based transactions for regulatory fee payments, according to official details.

Officials said the move is part of broader efforts to streamline administrative processes, reduce reliance on manual payments and improve transparency across regulatory operations.

Industry observers say the decision reflects Pakistan’s growing push towards digitisation of public sector services as regulators increasingly integrate financial technology solutions into government processes.

The amendment is expected to benefit power companies, investors and consumers by simplifying fee submissions and reducing delays linked to traditional banking procedures.

Analysts note that the shift toward digital payments also aligns with the government’s wider digital economy agenda focused on promoting cashless transactions, fintech growth and online public services.

The development comes amid accelerating adoption of digital financial systems across Pakistan, where regulators and government institutions are increasingly introducing technology-driven reforms to modernize service delivery and improve operational efficiency.
