Meta is removing a key placement-control feature from Ads Manager, meaning advertisers will soon lose the ability to exclude specific placements, platforms, devices and operating systems from individual ad sets.
MENLO PARK: Meta is moving to give its automated advertising systems greater control over where campaigns appear, as the company prepares to remove placement exclusion options from its Ads Manager platform.
The change means advertisers will no longer be able to manually prevent their ads from appearing in selected locations across Meta’s ecosystem, such as Facebook search results, Reels in-stream placements or other specific surfaces.
Advertisers Lose Placement-Level Control
Meta has begun notifying advertisers about the upcoming change, although the company has not announced a specific date for when the new restrictions will take effect.
The removal extends beyond individual placements. Advertisers are also expected to lose the ability to exclude entire platforms, as well as specific devices and operating systems, at the ad-set level.
For marketers, the shift could make campaign management more dependent on Meta’s automated systems rather than manual decisions over where advertisements should or should not appear.
Meta Pushes Further Toward Automated Advertising
The move is part of Meta’s broader strategy to automate advertising decisions using artificial intelligence and machine-learning systems.
Instead of allowing advertisers to manually remove placements, Meta is encouraging them to rely on automated delivery and tools such as placement value rules, which can adjust bids according to placement performance. Account-level placement controls will also remain available for certain exclusions.
Meta argues that automated systems can identify where advertisements are most likely to generate results by analysing large amounts of campaign data.
However, the change is likely to concern advertisers who deliberately exclude certain placements because of brand-safety requirements, poor traffic quality or previous campaign performance.
Messenger Stories Also Set for Removal
The placement changes come alongside another adjustment to Meta’s advertising ecosystem.
Messenger Stories is scheduled to be removed as an advertising placement from August 27. Advertisers currently using the placement will have their delivery automatically redistributed among eligible alternatives.
The developments underline Meta’s continuing shift away from manual campaign controls and toward algorithm-driven advertising.
For businesses and digital marketers, the challenge will increasingly be to optimise campaigns around Meta’s automated systems rather than deciding exactly where every advertisement appears.
