OpenAI has rolled out a new feature in its coding tool OpenAI Codex, introducing animated “AI pets” designed to assist developers during programming sessions.
According to reports, the update adds optional floating companions that appear as an overlay within the Codex app. These AI pets do not write code themselves but instead act as visual assistants—showing what the system is working on, notifying users when tasks are completed, and signaling when input is required.
The feature allows developers to monitor coding progress in real time without switching between windows, improving workflow efficiency and multitasking capabilities.
Users can activate or remove these companions using simple commands like “/pet,” with eight built-in designs available. The system also supports customization, allowing users to generate their own AI pets using prompts, with early versions drawing inspiration from classic digital assistants.
The AI pets are currently available on both Windows and macOS versions of Codex. As part of the launch, the company is also offering limited-time incentives, including free access to premium services for selected user-created designs.
The move reflects a broader trend in “vibe coding,” where AI tools increasingly enhance the developer experience by combining automation with interactive and user-friendly interfaces.
