PTA Approves 21 New Internet Providers to Boost Broadband Across Pakistan

ISLAMABAD

Pakistan’s telecom regulator, Pakistan Telecommunication Authority, has approved 21 new district-level internet service providers in a move aimed at expanding broadband access and improving connectivity nationwide.

The approvals are part of a broader initiative launched under the country’s updated broadband framework, which came into effect on January 1, 2026. The policy is designed to encourage local entrepreneurship and enhance internet penetration, particularly in underserved and remote areas.

Under the new licensing regime, each operator is permitted to provide internet services within a single district, with licenses valid for up to 10 years—offering long-term operational certainty and incentives for investment.

Officials say the initiative lowers entry barriers for smaller, regional players, fostering competition in Pakistan’s telecom sector while accelerating the rollout of reliable broadband services.

The regulator has received dozens of applications since the program’s launch, reflecting strong interest from companies seeking to tap into growing demand for internet services across smaller cities and rural regions.

Industry experts note that improved connectivity could significantly benefit education, freelancing, and small businesses by enabling access to digital platforms and online opportunities, especially in areas where internet quality remains inconsistent.

The PTA emphasized that expanding broadband infrastructure is critical for bridging Pakistan’s digital divide and strengthening the country’s digital economy, as millions of users continue to rely on stable internet for daily communication, work, and services.
