Pakistan’s Petrol Subsidy App Crashes with Server Errors After Launch

Technical failure raises concerns over preparedness as government rolls out digital relief system for millions

Pakistan’s newly launched mobile application for petrol subsidies faced a major setback shortly after rollout, with users reporting widespread server errors and access failures, highlighting concerns over the system’s readiness for nationwide deployment.

The application, introduced as part of the government’s targeted subsidy programme for low-income fuel consumers, became inaccessible to many users attempting to register, with reports of “internal server errors” surfacing within hours of launch.

Officials had expected millions of users to sign up simultaneously for the scheme, but the early crash has pointed to possible limitations in server capacity and infrastructure handling large-scale digital demand.

The subsidy initiative is a key component of the government’s strategy to replace blanket fuel subsidies with a more targeted, app-based system aimed primarily at motorcyclists and low-income groups. Under the plan, eligible users would receive digital quotas or vouchers for subsidised petrol through a centralized platform.

However, the technical disruption has raised questions about execution, with experts warning that large-scale digital welfare systems require robust backend infrastructure, stress testing, and phased rollouts to avoid service breakdowns.

The development comes at a time when Pakistan is grappling with rising fuel prices and economic pressure, making timely delivery of relief measures critical for vulnerable segments of the population.

Authorities have yet to issue a detailed statement on the outage or provide a timeline for full restoration of services. Meanwhile, users continue to face difficulties accessing the platform, potentially delaying the distribution of much-needed fuel subsidies.

Analysts caution that while digitisation of public services remains a positive step, system reliability and user accessibility will be crucial in determining the success of such initiatives.
