Pakistan has unveiled an ambitious plan to strengthen its cyber defence capabilities by training more than 3,500 cybersecurity professionals, as authorities warn that future conflicts and security challenges will increasingly be fought in the digital domain.

The initiative includes the organization of the country’s fifth national cybersecurity hackathon, aimed at identifying talent, enhancing technical skills and preparing a new generation of experts to counter evolving cyber threats.

Under the programme, officers from more than 40 government departments will also receive specialized cybersecurity training to improve the public sector’s resilience against cyberattacks and data breaches.

Officials said hackathon competitions will be held across eight major cities, with more than Rs220 million allocated for the nationwide effort.

The competitions are expected to attract significant participation from across the country, with around 1,450 teams and more than 3,500 candidates set to compete in various cybersecurity challenges.

In addition, authorities plan to conduct 26 specialized workshops in 20 cities to provide advanced training and practical exposure for aspiring cybersecurity professionals.

Participants demonstrating outstanding performance will receive awards and recognition, with the programme designed to encourage innovation and strengthen Pakistan’s cybersecurity workforce.

The initiative comes as governments and organizations worldwide face an increasing number of cyber threats targeting critical infrastructure, public institutions and private enterprises.

Officials noted that Pakistan has made notable progress in the global cybersecurity landscape, with the country ranking among the top 46 nations in the International Telecommunication Union’s Global Cybersecurity Index 2024.

The latest programme is expected to further enhance Pakistan’s cyber preparedness, develop local expertise and support efforts to secure the country’s rapidly expanding digital ecosystem.
