Pakistan Joins Global AI Body as Founding Member, IT Minister Heads to China for WAIC 2026

Shaza Fatima Khawaja to hold talks on AI cooperation, technology transfer and strategic partnerships at Shanghai summit

Pakistan has joined the World Artificial Intelligence Organization (WAIO) as a founding member, marking a major step in the country’s efforts to strengthen its global role in artificial intelligence, as Federal Minister for IT and Telecommunication Shaza Fatima Khawaja departed for a two-day visit to Shanghai, China.

According to the Ministry of IT and Telecommunication, the minister will represent Pakistan at the 2026 World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC), one of the world’s leading AI gatherings, where global policymakers, technology companies and industry leaders will discuss the future of artificial intelligence.

The ministry said Pakistan’s founding membership in the World Artificial Intelligence Organization reflects the country’s commitment to advancing AI development, strengthening policy frameworks and adopting internationally recognized technologies.

During the visit, Shaza Fatima Khawaja is scheduled to hold a series of high-level meetings with ministers, technology executives and global IT leaders to explore cooperation in artificial intelligence, technology transfer, innovation and joint digital initiatives.

The discussions are expected to focus on expanding Pakistan’s AI ecosystem, attracting international collaboration and promoting investment in emerging technologies as the government accelerates its digital transformation agenda.

The visit comes as Pakistan seeks to position itself as an emerging player in the global AI landscape through stronger international partnerships, regulatory development and the adoption of advanced technologies across public and private sectors.
