Artificial intelligence may be making life easier, but a new international study has raised concerns that overreliance on AI tools could weaken human thinking and problem-solving abilities.
Researchers from Carnegie Mellon University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of Oxford, and University of California found that even short-term dependence on AI chatbots may negatively affect cognitive performance.
During the study, participants were assigned various mental tasks, with one group allowed to use AI assistants while others solved problems independently. Researchers observed that individuals relying on AI struggled once the assistance was removed, often becoming confused, giving incorrect answers, or abandoning the task entirely.
Experts involved in the research warned that constantly turning to AI for instant answers may gradually reduce the brain’s habit of critical thinking and independent analysis.
The study does not oppose the use of artificial intelligence itself, but instead stresses the importance of “balanced usage.” Researchers noted that while AI significantly improves speed and productivity, excessive dependence could weaken natural learning and analytical abilities over time.
The findings have renewed debate over how AI tools should be designed in the future. Researchers suggested that next-generation AI systems should function more like teachers that encourage learning and reasoning, rather than simply acting as machines that instantly provide answers.
Analysts say the research highlights a growing global challenge as AI rapidly becomes embedded in education, workplaces, and everyday decision-making, raising questions about how technology may reshape human intelligence in the long term.
