Mobile Internet to Be Suspended in Selected Areas on 9th and 10th Muharram Amid Tight Security Measures
ISLAMABAD
Authorities have decided to temporarily suspend mobile internet services in selected cities and sensitive areas during the 9th and 10th of Muharram as part of heightened security measures for Ashura processions and gatherings across Pakistan.
The temporary shutdowns are aimed at ensuring public safety, maintaining law and order, and preventing the misuse of communication networks during religious events that draw large crowds.
Officials said mobile broadband services will remain unavailable in designated locations identified by provincial administrations and security agencies, while voice and SMS services may continue operating depending on local security assessments.
The move comes as law enforcement agencies intensify surveillance and deploy additional personnel to secure Muharram processions, majalis, and other religious activities. Security arrangements have also been strengthened through monitoring systems, control rooms, and coordination among federal and provincial authorities.
Internet suspensions during major religious events have become a common security practice in Pakistan, with authorities arguing that temporary restrictions help mitigate potential threats and ensure the peaceful observance of Ashura.
Citizens have been advised to plan their travel and communication needs accordingly, particularly in areas where mobile data services may be affected during the two days.
