ISLAMABAD:

The government has stepped up efforts to ensure uninterrupted telecommunications services during the ongoing monsoon season, directing mobile network operators to strengthen network resilience and safeguard critical telecom infrastructure against potential weather-related disruptions.

The Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication has instructed telecom companies to take preventive measures to protect their networks and infrastructure, aiming to maintain reliable connectivity during heavy rains, floods and other emergencies.

According to ministry sources, 1122 emergency call centers have been activated across all four provinces, enabling the public to access emergency assistance throughout the monsoon season. Provincial emergency response centers will remain connected to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) central control room to facilitate coordinated disaster response.

Officials said emergency calls received through the 1122 service during floods and other natural disasters will be acted upon promptly. Provincial call centers will also maintain close coordination with the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to ensure uninterrupted emergency communications.

The ministry cited last year’s monsoon response as evidence of improved network resilience, noting that 27.8 million emergency calls were handled during flood-related emergencies. Despite widespread flooding, only 7% of telecom sites were affected, while 99% of disrupted sites were restored within one month, according to official figures.

The government said it remains committed to maintaining telecom connectivity and strengthening emergency communications throughout the current monsoon season as part of its broader disaster preparedness strategy.
