5G Trials Approved for Gilgit-Baltistan, Paving Way for High-Speed Connectivity

Islamabad

Pakistan has moved a step closer to expanding next-generation connectivity, as the federal government approved 5G trials in Gilgit-Baltistan, marking a significant milestone for digital development in the region.

The approval follows clearance of a summary by the Ministry of IT and Telecommunication Pakistan and the Ministry of Law and Justice Pakistan, after which it received formal endorsement from the Gilgit-Baltistan Council and ratification by the governor.

Key Role by Regional Leadership

Officials said Ghulam Abbas played a central role in securing the approval, holding consultations with Shaza Fatima Khawaja and the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority.

Telecom Firms Set to Begin Trials

With regulatory approvals in place, telecom operators will now be able to initiate 5G trials in the mountainous region, testing high-speed mobile internet capabilities.

Boost to Tourism and Business

Authorities say the rollout of 5G technology is expected to:

  • Accelerate digital connectivity
  • Improve communication infrastructure
  • Support tourism growth
  • Enhance business and commercial activities

Ghulam Abbas noted that faster internet speeds could significantly transform the region’s economy by enabling better access to digital services.

Toward a Connected Future

The move is seen as part of Pakistan’s broader push toward next-generation telecom infrastructure, with Gilgit-Baltistan emerging as a new frontier for digital expansion.

Analysts say successful trials could pave the way for wider 5G deployment across the country in the coming years.
