WhatsApp to End Support for Older Android Phones, Millions May Be Affected by 2026

Islamabad

Users of older Android smartphones may soon lose access to WhatsApp as parent company Meta moves to discontinue support for outdated operating systems, according to reports.

End of Support for Older Devices

From September 8, 2026, WhatsApp will stop working on Android devices running versions earlier than Android 6, effectively cutting off access for millions of users still using older smartphones.

Devices running Android 5 and 5.1 are expected to be among the most affected, with full access to the app likely ending earlier for some users.

Gradual Phase-Out Begins

Reports suggest that by early 2026, even some Android 6 and older systems may begin facing compatibility issues as the platform continues upgrading its features and security systems.

Meta regularly updates WhatsApp’s interface and privacy tools, gradually dropping support for legacy systems that can no longer handle modern functionalities.

Push Toward AI and Advanced Features

The company is also integrating more advanced features, including AI-based tools, which require newer hardware and updated operating systems for smooth performance.

Experts say this shift is part of a broader industry trend where messaging apps evolve beyond basic communication platforms into AI-enabled digital ecosystems.

Data Transfer Warning for Users

Users still relying on older devices are being advised to back up and transfer their chat history and media to newer smartphones before the cutoff date.

Failure to do so could result in loss of chat data and media files once support officially ends.

Security and Performance Upgrade

Meta says the decision is aimed at improving user security, privacy, and overall app performance, ensuring WhatsApp remains stable on modern devices.

Analysts note that while the move will enhance security, it may also accelerate smartphone upgrades among users in developing markets.
