Pakistan’s Third Telecom Operator Set to Launch 5G as PTA Clears Ufone for Commercial Rollout
Regulator issues go-ahead after inspections; expansion follows March spectrum auction and earlier launches by rivals
Pakistan is set to witness further expansion of next-generation connectivity as the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has granted approval to Ufone for the commercial launch of 5G services, making it the country’s third operator to enter the high-speed mobile market.
According to sources, the regulator has issued a formal commencement letter, allowing Ufone to begin 5G services following a detailed evaluation of its network infrastructure and service quality standards.
Officials said the PTA conducted inspections of selected network sites before granting approval, ensuring compliance with technical and operational benchmarks required for commercial rollout.
The development follows Pakistan’s 5G spectrum auction held on March 10, 2026, where major telecom operators secured bandwidth to deploy next-generation services. In the auction, Jazz acquired 190 MHz spectrum, Ufone secured 180 MHz, while Zong obtained 110 MHz.
The regulator completed the spectrum allocation process on March 14, paving the way for operators to move toward commercial deployment.
Jazz and Zong had already launched Pakistan’s first commercial 5G services on March 19, after obtaining their licences and fast-tracking deployment plans.
With Ufone now cleared for launch, industry analysts say competition in the telecom sector is expected to intensify, potentially improving service quality and accelerating adoption of high-speed connectivity.
The rollout of 5G is seen as a critical milestone in Pakistan’s digital transformation, enabling faster data speeds, lower latency, and support for advanced technologies such as smart cities, IoT, and digital الاقتصاد.
However, experts note that challenges such as infrastructure readiness, fiber expansion, and energy constraints will play a key role in determining the pace and success of nationwide 5G adoption.
The latest approval signals continued momentum in Pakistan’s telecom sector as it transitions toward next-generation digital connectivity.
