Pakistan’s Internet and Mobile Services at Risk as Criminals Target Telecom Towers Across Pakistan 330 Cases Reported
Pakistan’s telecom infrastructure is facing mounting challenges as officials revealed that hundreds of theft incidents targeting mobile network sites have disrupted connectivity and caused significant financial losses.
During a meeting of the IT committee, officials from the Universal Service Fund (USF) disclosed that 330 theft cases have been reported across more than 4,000 telecom towers under its network. Balochistan accounted for the highest number of incidents with 229 cases, followed by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa with 69, Sindh with 31, and Punjab with one reported case.
According to the data presented, 90 towers have repeatedly been targeted by thieves, while incidents included theft of diesel fuel, equipment and network infrastructure. Officials reported 42 cases of fuel theft alone, while security concerns prevented access to 32 locations.
Lawmakers expressed concern over the impact on internet and mobile services, stressing that the public remains dissatisfied with internet speeds and service quality. Senate committee members urged telecom operators and local authorities to register FIRs and take stronger action against those involved in theft and sabotage.
PTA officials said efforts are underway to improve services through regulatory action and enforcement measures. They added that the recent spectrum auction is expected to enhance 4G performance and pave the way for the launch of 5G services in Pakistan.
The revelations underscore the growing security and infrastructure challenges facing Pakistan’s digital connectivity sector, particularly in remote and underserved regions.
