Pakistan to Launch National Open Data Ecosystem with World Bank Support

ISLAMABAD

Pakistan’s Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication Pakistan has decided to establish a National Open Data Ecosystem, a major initiative aimed at improving access to public sector data and accelerating the country’s digital transformation.

The project, backed by financial assistance from the World Bank, seeks to make government data more accessible, structured, and usable for citizens, businesses, and researchers.

Officials said the initiative is designed to promote transparency, innovation, and evidence-based decision-making across multiple sectors, while unlocking economic and research opportunities through better data utilization.

Under the plan, public datasets will be organized and shared through a centralized system, enabling wider access to government information for entrepreneurs, academics, and policymakers.

The Ministry of IT has invited proposals from local and international consulting firms for the development and implementation of the ecosystem, with submissions expected by mid-June. Authorities indicated that strong technical expertise will be a key criterion in the selection process.

Officials described the National Open Data Ecosystem as a core component of Pakistan’s broader digital strategy, emphasizing its potential to enhance public service delivery, foster innovation, and create new economic opportunities.

Experts say the initiative could significantly improve the quality of public services while opening new avenues for research and data-driven solutions, ultimately contributing to long-term economic growth.
