National Assembly IT Panel Criticises Delays in Karachi IT Park Project, Seeks Swift Action
The National Assembly Standing Committee on Information Technology on Tuesday expressed dissatisfaction over delays in the development of the Karachi IT Park project, describing the slow progress on the flagship initiative as a matter of concern for the country’s technology sector.
During a committee meeting chaired by Syed Amin Ul Haque, lawmakers questioned officials over the project’s stalled bidding process and the lack of visible progress despite its strategic importance for Pakistan’s digital economy.
Officials from the Pakistan Software Export Board (PSEB) informed the committee that the bidding process had been conducted twice, but no company participated on either occasion, resulting in further delays to the project.
The explanation failed to satisfy committee members, who stressed that the prolonged delay was hindering efforts to strengthen Pakistan’s IT infrastructure and boost technology exports.
Chairman Syed Amin Ul Haque said the pace of work by the Ministry of Information Technology and PSEB on the Karachi IT Park project remained slow, despite the project’s significance for the country’s growing technology industry.
“It is regrettable that such an important project has fallen victim to delays,” he remarked, urging authorities to accelerate efforts to resolve outstanding issues.
The committee directed the relevant departments to complete the bidding process at the earliest and ensure that construction work on the IT Park begins without further delay.
Lawmakers emphasized that the project is critical for supporting startups, software companies and technology professionals, and warned that unnecessary delays could undermine Pakistan’s ambitions to expand its digital economy and IT exports.
