ISLAMABAD:

Pakistani student Prewash Hakeem has won a silver award at the Asian Science Camp 2026 in Hong Kong, securing international recognition for Pakistan among hundreds of young scientists from across the region and beyond.

The achievement came at a week-long science camp held at the University of Hong Kong from Aug. 2 to Aug. 8, where more than 350 young science students from 48 countries participated.

Prewash Hakeem’s project was among 54 projects presented at the camp and was selected for the final shortlist of 12 projects. Her work was evaluated by a 13-member panel comprising Nobel laureates, university academics and industry experts.

Projects were assessed on the strength of their ideas, quality of presentation, adherence to time limits and potential impact.

Pakistan’s delegation included students from all four provinces and Islamabad. The team comprised Danish Khan from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Abdullah Imtiaz from Islamabad, Baseer Khan from Balochistan, Mahnoor Amjad from Punjab and Prewash Hakeem from Sindh.

The Pakistani team was led by Rehana Batool, Chief Scientific Officer at the Pakistan Science Foundation, which selects five students each year for the Asian Science Camp through a merit-based and transparent selection process.

The foundation said male and female students from across Pakistan are given equal opportunities during the selection process.

The camp also gave Pakistani students the opportunity to interact directly with leading scientists and Nobel Prize-winning researchers, exposing them to international scientific research and ideas.

Prewash’s silver award marks a notable achievement for Pakistan’s young scientific community and highlights the potential of the country’s students to compete on international platforms.
