LAHORE

The Punjab government has announced plans to introduce satellite-based internet services across the province, aiming to expand high-speed connectivity to remote and underserved regions.

The initiative was unveiled by Senator Anusha Rahman, senior adviser to the chief minister, during a leadership summit in Lahore focused on emerging technologies and digital assets.

Officials said the move is part of a broader strategy to bridge Pakistan’s digital divide by connecting villages, schools, colleges, and hospitals that currently lack reliable internet access. Satellite technology is expected to overcome infrastructure challenges that have long limited connectivity in rural areas.

The government is launching the initiative under a “Connect the Unconnected” mission, with plans to begin rollout in the public sector before gradually expanding access.

Authorities also set a target to link around six million young people with modern digital technologies over the next four years, as part of efforts to boost skills development and economic participation.

Analysts say the introduction of satellite internet could significantly improve service delivery in education, healthcare, and governance, while accelerating Punjab’s broader digital transformation agenda.
