Pakistan Telecommunication Authority Signals 5G Progress as Operators Activate Sites Across Islamabad

ISLAMABAD:

Pakistan’s telecom sector has begun rolling out early-stage 5G infrastructure, with key sites now operational in major areas of the federal capital following the issuance of next-generation licenses.

Officials from the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority confirmed that 5G sites have been activated in strategic locations, including the Red Zone, Blue Area, Parliament Lodges, and several sectors of Islamabad, marking a significant step toward nationwide deployment.

Among operators, Jazz has activated around 180 5G sites, while Zong has brought approximately 150 sites online. Ufone is expected to follow suit after completing the import of required 5G equipment and infrastructure.

Despite infrastructure progress, full consumer experience remains limited, as leading smartphone makers such as Apple and Samsung have yet to roll out complete 5G support updates for users in Pakistan.

So far, over 100 mobile brands have enabled 5G compatibility across more than 2,200 devices, but users are still awaiting software updates from manufacturers to access the network seamlessly.

Industry experts suggest that while initial deployment has begun, it may take up to two years for 5G services in Pakistan to fully stabilise and deliver consistent high-speed connectivity nationwide.
