Instagram will discontinue its end-to-end encrypted direct messaging feature on May 8, 2026, prompting affected users to download their chats and media before the service is shut down.
The platform confirmed the change through in-app notifications and support documentation, advising users who enabled encrypted conversations to export their messages and attachments before the deadline.
The feature, introduced in 2023, allowed conversations to be protected through end-to-end encryption, meaning only the devices involved in the chat could read the messages. Once the feature is removed, messages will still be encrypted while being transmitted, but the platform could theoretically access them after processing on its servers.
Parent company Meta Platforms said the decision was influenced by low adoption of the encrypted messaging option among Instagram users. Unlike some messaging apps where encryption is enabled automatically, Instagram required users to manually start a separate encrypted chat, which analysts say limited its use.
Meta has instead encouraged users seeking fully encrypted communication to rely on WhatsApp, where end-to-end encryption is enabled by default for messages, voice calls, and file transfers.
The move comes amid growing global debate over encryption and online safety, with governments and regulators in several regions arguing that strong encryption can hinder the detection of illegal or harmful content on digital platforms.
Industry observers say the removal of encrypted chats from Instagram reflects a broader balancing act between user privacy and regulatory pressure facing major technology companies.
Since launching direct messaging in 2013, Instagram has expanded its messaging ecosystem to include group chats, disappearing messages, voice notes, and cross-platform communication with Facebook Messenger.
Analysts note that messaging has become a central pillar of engagement across Meta’s social platforms, alongside features such as Stories, Reels, and creator-brand communication tools.
Instagram said users who previously enabled encrypted conversations should follow in-app instructions to download their chat data before May 8, after which the encrypted chat feature will no longer be accessible.
The change marks a shift in Meta’s messaging strategy, even as end-to-end encryption continues expanding across other services within its ecosystem. 🔐📱
