In a move set to impact millions of telecom consumers, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has directed telecom operators to stop increasing mobile package prices on a monthly basis, introducing stricter rules under the Mobile Tariff Regulations 2025.
Officials said telecom companies will now be allowed to revise package prices only on a quarterly basis, replacing the earlier practice where prices were frequently adjusted every month. Operators have been formally notified of the new guidelines.
Under the revised framework, companies may increase package prices by 10–20% compared to the previous year’s rates, but only after obtaining prior approval from the regulator. Telecom firms must also seek PTA’s clearance before launching new packages or adjusting existing tariffs.
Authorities said the decision follows a growing number of consumer complaints regarding frequent price increases. The regulator aims to create a more balanced and transparent tariff system while ensuring consumer protection.
PTA officials noted that Pakistan’s average revenue per user (ARPU) remains among the lowest in the region, although it has gradually improved in recent years. They added that ARPU is expected to rise further with the rollout of 5G services, while the recent spectrum auction is likely to improve network coverage, performance, and data speeds nationwide. 📶
