Pakistan Warns Against Online Blasphemous Content, Urges Public to Report Violations

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has issued a renewed warning that uploading, sharing, or propagating unlawful and sacrilegious content on the internet and social media platforms constitutes a punishable offence under the laws of Pakistan.

In a public advisory campaign circulated online, the regulator emphasized that digital platforms are subject to national legislation and that individuals found involved in disseminating blasphemous or illegal material may face strict legal consequences.

The statement underscores the government’s broader efforts to strengthen oversight of cyberspace and curb the spread of content deemed harmful to religious sentiments or national integrity. Officials reiterated that social media users bear responsibility for ensuring that their online activity complies with local laws.

To facilitate enforcement, the PTA has urged citizens to report objectionable links through its official complaint portal (http://complaint.pta.gov.pk/RegisterComplaint.aspx) or by using the PTA CMS mobile application. The authority said public cooperation is essential in identifying and blocking unlawful material in a timely manner.

The move aligns with ongoing digital regulatory measures introduced by the Government of Pakistan to tighten monitoring of online platforms amid growing concerns over misuse of social media.

Analysts note that Pakistan has intensified cyber governance in recent years, balancing digital expansion with regulatory controls aimed at safeguarding religious, cultural, and national values.

The PTA reiterated that internet freedom does not extend to content that violates the law and warned that strict action will be taken against offenders.
