CDA Advances Plan for Electric Tram to Power Green Transit in Islamabad

Islamabad:

Pakistan’s capital is moving closer to a cleaner, modern public transport system as the Capital Development Authority (CDA) advances plans to introduce an electric tram network, part of a broader push to ease congestion and cut carbon emissions in the fast-growing city.

Progress on the proposed tram and parallel e-bus initiatives was reviewed at a high-level meeting at CDA headquarters on Wednesday, chaired by CDA Chairman and Chief Commissioner Islamabad Muhammad Ali Randhawa. Senior officials examined implementation timelines, infrastructure requirements and the integration of the new system with Islamabad’s existing transport network.

Officials said a detailed feasibility study will be launched shortly, focusing on priority routes linking key parts of the city, including Islamabad International Airport. The study will be based on updated ridership data and long-term demand forecasts.

Under the plan, the electric tram system will feature purpose-built depots, parking and maintenance facilities, and dedicated charging infrastructure. Operations will be managed through a modern Intelligent Transport System (ITS) to ensure safety, efficiency and reliability.

Randhawa said the project would be fully digital and cashless, adding that securing carbon credits at the planning stage was essential to maximise its environmental benefits. “This initiative will provide citizens with modern, affordable travel while significantly reducing pollution in the capital,” he said.

Islamabad has been weighing sustainable transport options for years amid rising traffic and deteriorating air quality. The electric tram, alongside ongoing e-bus projects, signals a policy shift towards green mobility and climate-conscious urban planning.

Once operational, officials expect the system to ease daily commutes, reduce fuel consumption and position Islamabad in line with global trends in clean and smart public transportation.
