Pakistan Launches ‘Maktab’ to Digitise Student Records Across Public Universities

Pakistan has launched a new nationwide digital education platform, Maktab, aimed at maintaining comprehensive electronic records of students from enrolment to degree issuance, Minister of State for Federal Education Wajiha Qamar said on Tuesday.

Introduced under the framework of the Higher Education Commission (HEC), the system will initially be implemented in 25 public universities, with plans to expand it to all public-sector institutions in the next phase.

Speaking at a press conference in Islamabad, Qamar said Maktab will allow a student’s entire academic journey — including admissions, grades, transcripts and degrees — to be tracked through a single digital platform, reducing paperwork, curbing delays and improving transparency across the higher education system.

The minister said the government also plans to integrate artificial intelligence into the system to strengthen oversight, securely manage academic data and support smarter decision-making in education administration.

Qamar noted that broader digitisation efforts are already improving accountability within the education sector, including online scrutiny of tenders and real-time monitoring through digital portals at the Federal Directorate of Education (FDE). An AI-assisted education management portal is also nearing completion, she added.

She said new digital complaint mechanisms, including e-katcheries, now allow students and parents to raise grievances directly with authorities. The reforms also extend to online equivalence and verification systems at the Inter Board Coordination Commission, part of a wider push to modernise Pakistan’s education governance.

Officials said the Maktab system is a key step toward streamlining academic administration, improving service delivery and strengthening trust in public education institutions as Pakistan accelerates its digital transformation agenda.
