ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunication Shaza Fatima Khawaja held talks with a high-level delegation from the Gates Foundation, with both sides agreeing to explore stronger cooperation in artificial intelligence, data systems, health technology, financial inclusion and capacity building.

The Gates Foundation delegation was led by Dr. Kalpana Kochhar and Dr. Anita Zaidi, according to the Ministry of IT and Telecommunication.

During the meeting, Shaza Fatima highlighted the government’s Digital Nation Pakistan agenda, saying the initiative would play a key role in modernising public service delivery and strengthening the country’s digital economy.

The minister said international partnerships with organisations such as the Gates Foundation were important for advancing Pakistan’s digital vision and helping translate technology-driven reforms into practical improvements for citizens and the wider economy.

Discussions also focused on emerging technologies and the potential for greater collaboration in areas where digital systems can support public-sector efficiency and social development. Particular attention was given to artificial intelligence, data systems and health technology, with both sides agreeing to expand cooperation in these fields.

The Gates Foundation delegation appreciated Pakistan’s ongoing digital reforms and technological progress, according to the ministry, signalling interest in strengthening engagement as the country accelerates its digital transformation agenda.

The two sides also agreed to deepen collaboration on financial inclusion, an area where digital platforms and technology-enabled services can help expand access to financial tools and services, particularly for underserved communities.

Capacity building was another key area discussed during the meeting, with both sides expressing a commitment to strengthening partnerships aimed at developing technical expertise and building the skills required to support Pakistan’s growing digital economy.

The engagement reflects Pakistan’s efforts to bring international partners into its broader digital transformation programme, with the government increasingly focusing on technology, data and innovation as tools for improving public services and expanding economic opportunities.

The proposed cooperation in AI, data systems and health technology could also provide new avenues for technology-led solutions in public services, while collaboration on financial inclusion and capacity building could support broader participation in the digital economy.

The meeting comes as Pakistan continues to position the Digital Nation Pakistan agenda as a central part of its efforts to modernise government services, strengthen digital infrastructure and create a more technology-driven economy.
