SAN FRANCISCO: Google is expanding the role of Gemini on Android phones, with a new troubleshooting feature designed to help users diagnose and resolve common device problems without having to search through complicated settings menus.
The feature, known as Device Help, allows users to describe a problem in natural language and have Gemini identify relevant device settings before suggesting a possible solution. The feature has been spotted in testing on Pixel devices and is currently marked as experimental.
Gemini Turns Into a Phone Troubleshooter
Instead of manually searching through Android’s settings, users can explain an issue directly to Gemini.
For example, if a phone’s display appears unusually yellow, Gemini can inspect relevant settings and point the user towards features such as Night Light that may be responsible.
The approach could eventually cover a wider range of everyday problems, including display settings, connectivity issues, sound problems and other features that are difficult for users to locate.
AI Could Replace Lengthy Settings Searches
Google’s move reflects a broader effort to make Gemini more deeply integrated into Android and turn the AI assistant into a practical tool for everyday device management.
Rather than directing users to support pages or requiring them to navigate through multiple menus, Gemini could potentially act as a conversational guide, understanding what the user is experiencing and identifying the settings most likely to resolve the problem.
The feature is particularly significant for less technically experienced users, who may struggle to identify the correct Android setting when something stops working as expected.
Feature Still in Testing
Device Help is currently being tested and has appeared with a Labs label, meaning Google has not yet confirmed a full public rollout or the complete range of devices that will support it.
The initial testing has reportedly been observed on a Pixel 9 running Android 17, suggesting that Google’s own devices may receive the feature first.
If Google expands the functionality, Gemini could become more than an AI chatbot and evolve into a built-in troubleshooting assistant capable of helping users understand and resolve common smartphone issues.
Another Step in Google’s AI Push
The development comes as Google continues to integrate Gemini across its ecosystem. Recent updates have increasingly positioned Gemini as an assistant capable of understanding context and helping users complete tasks rather than simply answering questions.
For Android users, the potential benefit is straightforward: instead of hunting through settings to fix a problem, they may soon be able to simply tell Gemini what is wrong and follow its guidance.
