Pakistan’s telecom regulator has cut eSIM activation charges and approved up to 10 free transfers of eSIM profiles between compatible smartphones, in a move aimed at accelerating digital SIM adoption and making device switching easier for mobile users.

Under the revised policy, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has capped the maximum initial eSIM issuance fee at Rs1,500, down from previous charges imposed by mobile operators. Subscribers will also be allowed to transfer their eSIMs between compatible devices free of cost up to 10 times. The new policy is scheduled to take effect in mid-August following consultations with cellular mobile operators.

The decision follows recommendations from a parliamentary committee that called on the regulator to make eSIM services more affordable and reduce the need for customers to visit service centres for routine SIM-related procedures.

As part of broader digital reforms, the PTA is also working with the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) and telecom operators to enable remote SIM issuance through the Pak ID platform using facial recognition and multi-factor identity verification. The initiative aims to allow users to obtain and manage SIMs digitally while strengthening security and reducing fraud.

The latest measures reflect the regulator’s efforts to promote wider adoption of eSIM technology as Pakistan moves towards more digital-first telecom services, while improving convenience for smartphone users and supporting the country’s ongoing digital transformation.
