Late-Night Relief: IT Firms, Gyms Freed from Timing Curbs

ISLAMABAD

Pakistan has exempted IT companies, call centres, and gyms from recently imposed operating time restrictions, offering relief to key service and digital sectors facing disruption under austerity measures.

According to official notifications, both the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority–linked IT ecosystem and sports facilities have been allowed to continue operations beyond the 8pm closure limit, with some services permitted to operate round the clock.

The decision also covers call centres working with international clients and IT firms engaged in global digital services, ensuring uninterrupted operations across different time zones. Gyms and sports facilities, including fitness centres and padel courts, have also been fully exempted from early closure rules.

Authorities said the move follows concerns raised by businesses over operational disruptions, especially in sectors tied to foreign clients and health-related activities.

The relaxation comes amid broader energy-saving policies, under which most markets and shops remain bound to early closing hours, while essential and export-oriented services receive exemptions.

Officials say the revised policy aims to balance energy conservation efforts with economic continuity, particularly in sectors linked to exports, digital services, and public health.
