Lahore
Punjab Police is preparing to introduce AI-powered surveillance patrol vans, named “Police Eye”, in a major step toward modernising traffic enforcement and strengthening urban security.
Real-Time AI Monitoring on Wheels
The new system will use advanced artificial intelligence to enable real-time detection of fake number plates, identification of traffic defaulters, and tracking of suspected vehicles as they move through city roads.
Officials say the technology will allow officers to respond more quickly and accurately, reducing reliance on manual checks and traditional enforcement methods.
Data-Driven Policing Model
The initiative reflects a broader shift toward data-driven policing, where artificial intelligence and digital surveillance tools are increasingly being integrated into routine law enforcement operations.
Authorities believe the system will improve:
- Traffic law compliance
- Crime detection efficiency
- Urban road safety monitoring
Part of Smart City Push
As urban populations continue to expand, the introduction of AI-enabled patrol vans is being seen as part of Punjab’s wider smart governance and digital transformation agenda.
Security experts say such systems could significantly enhance situational awareness on the ground, while also helping build centralised databases for faster decision-making.
Balancing Innovation and Privacy
While the initiative has been welcomed for its efficiency, it also raises questions about data privacy and surveillance oversight, a growing global concern as AI-based policing tools become more widespread.
Authorities, however, maintain that the system will operate within legal frameworks and be used strictly for public safety and traffic management purposes.
