ISLAMABAD
Pakistan has stepped into a new phase of tech-driven law enforcement as the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) introduces an artificial intelligence-based system to trace the country’s most wanted criminals by reconstructing their current appearance.
The system uses advanced algorithms to generate updated facial visuals from old photographs, enabling authorities to identify fugitives even if they have altered their looks through ageing, disguise, or cosmetic changes. Officials say the move could make it significantly harder for suspects to evade capture by simply changing their appearance.
At the core of the initiative is a digitally upgraded “red book” — a central database of wanted individuals — now enhanced with AI capabilities. The platform compiles detailed profiles, including identity records, travel documents, contact information, financial data, and known associates, offering investigators a more comprehensive view of each suspect.
Authorities say the database will also document criminal networks, particularly human trafficking operations, mapping routes, methods, and last known locations. Dozens of traffickers are already listed, reflecting a renewed push to dismantle organised crime groups.
The system is expected to be accessible to both law enforcement officials and the public, broadening oversight and encouraging citizen engagement in identifying suspects.
Officials describe the initiative as part of a wider digital transformation strategy aimed at replacing manual investigative processes with integrated, data-driven systems capable of real-time analysis and coordination.
With criminals increasingly adopting sophisticated tactics to stay hidden, authorities believe artificial intelligence could prove decisive — turning technology into a powerful ally in the fight against crime and making it far more difficult for fugitives to disappear.
