Govt to Review High PTA Taxes on Smartphones After Lawmakers Raise Concerns

ISLAMABAD:

Pakistan’s government may review the current tax structure imposed on smartphones following growing concerns among lawmakers over the heavy device taxes charged by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority.

The issue was raised by members of the National Assembly, prompting the chairman of the Standing Committee on Finance to take up the matter with the Federal Board of Revenue and the Ministry of Finance Pakistan.

According to Kasim Gilani, officials from both institutions have been asked to present their position on the current taxation framework and discuss possible adjustments before the parliamentary panel.

Lawmakers have argued that the existing tax regime significantly increases the cost of mobile phones, placing a burden on consumers and limiting access to modern technology.

Officials said the planned review aims to strike a balance between protecting government revenue and making smartphones more accessible to the public.

Policy experts note that smartphones have become essential tools for communication, education, business, and access to digital services, particularly as Pakistan expands its digital economy and online public services.

The discussion is expected to focus on whether the current taxation structure should be revised to encourage broader adoption of smartphones while maintaining fiscal stability.
