PTA, Meta Develop ‘Double OTP’ Security System to Curb WhatsApp Hacking in Pakistan

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has developed a new security mechanism in collaboration with Meta Platforms to combat the rising incidents of WhatsApp account hacking in the country.

Under the new system, a “Double OTP” feature will be introduced to enhance user account protection. According to PTA officials, if the first one-time password (OTP) is compromised or reaches hackers, a second OTP will automatically be generated after three minutes, adding an extra layer of security.

Authorities said fraudsters have been using various social engineering tactics to trick users into sharing their OTPs, allowing them to gain unauthorized access to WhatsApp accounts. Once access is secured, hackers often impersonate victims and request money from their contacts.

The new security framework, named “Meta OTP,” will also provide users with a dedicated option to regain account access in case their OTP is leaked.

PTA officials confirmed that technical consultations between PTA and Meta have been completed. The feature will be launched first in Pakistan before being gradually rolled out to other countries, subject to its success.

Officials expect the Double OTP system to significantly reduce online fraud and WhatsApp-related cybercrime incidents nationwide.
