Punjab Moves to Modern Farming with Tech-Based Agriculture Plan

The Punjab cabinet on Tuesday approved a revised PC-1 of the “Agriculture Innovation and Technology 2021–2025” project, signaling a shift towards technology-based farming to improve productivity and reduce water wastage across the province.

The decision was taken at a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, where officials outlined plans to promote drip and sprinkler irrigation systems as alternatives to water-intensive flood irrigation, amid growing pressure on Punjab’s water resources.

Officials said the project aims to help farmers produce more with less water, address groundwater depletion, and modernize traditional farming practices through the use of efficient agricultural technologies.

The revised plan also emphasizes field extension services to enable early detection of crop diseases and pests, reducing losses and supporting timely decision-making during crop cycles.

According to the briefing, the initiative is expected to raise farm incomes, improve crop quality, and strengthen rural economies, while contributing to long-term food security and agricultural exports.

During the meeting, the chief minister also announced the launch of the ‘Apna Khet, Apna Rozgar’ programme, directing officials to allocate state-owned agricultural land to 50,000 landless citizens to promote employment and inclusive growth.
