WhatsApp Introduces Forward Count for Channel Posts in Android Beta

WhatsApp has begun testing a new forward count feature for channel updates, offering administrators deeper insight into how their content spreads beyond their immediate audience.

The feature, now rolling out to select users on WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.26.4.11, displays the number of times a channel update has been forwarded. The count appears beneath each post, alongside the forward button and emoji reactions. At this stage, the data is visible only to channel administrators, not followers.

The update is part of WhatsApp’s broader effort to support creators and organisations using Channels, without altering the experience for regular users. While reactions indicate how followers respond to a post, the new forward count highlights how widely an update is being shared across private chats and groups, offering a clearer measure of its reach.

Earlier reports suggested WhatsApp is also experimenting with view counts for channel updates, though that feature remains under development. The company is reportedly testing multiple formats, including options where view numbers are shown only to admins or made visible to followers as well.

WhatsApp has stressed that user privacy remains unchanged. Forwarded channel updates continue to be protected by end-to-end encryption, and the platform does not track who shared a post or where it was sent. Instead, the system calculates the total number of recipients selected during forwarding, even if the same update is shared multiple times within a single chat.

The forward count feature is currently available to a limited number of beta testers who have installed the latest Android beta from the Google Play Store. If testing proceeds smoothly, WhatsApp is expected to expand the rollout to a wider audience in the coming weeks.
