Google is expanding its artificial intelligence footprint by bringing Gemini AI deeper into Google Maps, transforming the app into a smart, interactive tour guide for walkers and cyclists. After launching Gemini-powered assistance for driving navigation last year, the company is now extending the feature to walking and cycling directions on both Android and iOS.
With the update, users navigating cities on foot or by bicycle can interact with Gemini directly inside Google Maps. Instead of switching between apps, users can ask real-time questions such as which neighbourhood they are currently in, locate nearby landmarks, or find top-rated restaurants and cafés along their route.
Google said Gemini leverages fresh, real-world data from Google Maps to deliver context-aware suggestions based on a user’s exact location and planned route. This allows for more relevant recommendations, enabling spontaneous stops and smoother exploration, particularly in dense urban areas.
The update is expected to be especially useful for cyclists. Gemini’s hands-free functionality allows riders to check their estimated time of arrival (ETA), receive reminders about upcoming meetings, and even send text messages without stopping or unlocking their phones. The feature is designed to reduce distractions while improving safety and convenience.
According to Google, the Gemini-powered Maps experience is rolling out globally on Android and iOS devices where Gemini is supported. As with most Google updates, the rollout will happen in phases, meaning some users may receive access earlier than others.
Industry analysts say the move strengthens Google’s push to integrate generative AI into everyday navigation, positioning Google Maps not just as a directions tool, but as a real-time digital companion for travel, commuting, and urban exploration.
