Islamabad:
Prime Minister Mian Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday chaired a strategic review meeting of the National Information Technology Board (NITB), issuing directives for the time-bound digitalisation of key government functions, including the complete digital transformation of Hajj operations for 2026.
According to officials present at the meeting, the prime minister stressed the need for institutional restructuring, clear performance benchmarks and strict accountability mechanisms to ensure that digital reforms translate into improved public service delivery.
Member (Digital & Emerging Technologies) at the Ministry of IT and Telecom, Asfand Yar Khan, said the upcoming Hajj operation would be conducted through comprehensive digital systems, aimed at improving efficiency, transparency and facilitation for pilgrims.
He said the initiative aligns with the government’s broader vision to modernise public services through technology, adding that digital platforms would streamline processes related to registration, logistics, payments and coordination during Hajj 2026.
The prime minister emphasised that digital transformation should not remain limited to policy discussions but must deliver measurable outcomes for citizens. He directed relevant institutions to adopt international best practices and ensure inter-departmental coordination for seamless implementation.
Officials said the move forms part of the government’s wider efforts to advance the Digital Pakistan agenda, with a focus on leveraging technology to enhance governance, reduce inefficiencies and improve citizen experience across essential services.
