Islamabad, Jan 15:
Zong, Pakistan’s leading digital and connectivity services provider, has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Chinese technology firm ZTE Corporation and its authorised distributor Siccotel to accelerate the adoption of 5G-enabled devices across the country.
The partnership, described as a first-of-its-kind initiative in Pakistan’s telecom sector, aims to expand access to next-generation smartphones by addressing affordability barriers that have historically limited the uptake of advanced mobile technologies.
Under the agreement, ZTE will introduce a wide range of 5G smartphones for the Pakistani market, spanning entry-level, mid-range and premium segments. The portfolio will also include high-performance gaming-focused devices targeting young and tech-savvy users, a segment that has seen rapid growth amid rising mobile data consumption and esports popularity.
To support broader adoption, the partners will roll out Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) financing options, enabling customers to purchase advanced smartphones through flexible instalment plans. Devices will be offered at competitive prices and bundled with Zong’s service packages, including data-centric plans, gaming and esports services, and digital entertainment offerings.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Sajid Munir, Head of Marketing at Zong, said the collaboration aligns with the company’s long-term strategy to support Pakistan’s digital transformation.
“With 5G on the horizon and smartphone penetration still evolving, ensuring affordability and access to advanced technology is critical,” he said. “By combining inclusive 5G devices with flexible payment models, we aim to empower more Pakistanis to participate in the digital economy and benefit from next-generation connectivity.”
Industry analysts view initiatives such as this as a key enabler for Pakistan’s transition towards 5G, which is expected to play a pivotal role in strengthening the country’s digital infrastructure. Beyond faster mobile speeds, 5G technology is anticipated to support innovation across sectors such as e-commerce, fintech, cloud services, smart cities, remote healthcare and online education.
While Pakistan is still in the preparatory phase for commercial 5G rollout, expanding access to compatible devices is seen as a necessary step in building consumer readiness. Experts note that without widespread availability of affordable 5G smartphones, the benefits of future spectrum deployment would remain limited to a small segment of users.
The collaboration also reflects a broader shift within the telecom industry towards device-led strategies, where operators increasingly combine connectivity, hardware and digital services to drive user engagement and revenue growth.
By integrating next-generation devices, innovative financing solutions and bundled digital services, the Zong-ZTE-Siccotel partnership is expected to contribute to greater digital inclusion and support the government’s vision of a ‘Digital Pakistan’, positioning the telecom sector for the demands of a more connected and data-driven future.
