Punjab opens laptop scheme to private university students

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz on Friday announced the expansion of the provincial laptop scheme to include students enrolled in private universities, widening the government’s push for digital inclusion in higher education.

Speaking on the International Day of Education, the chief minister said education must be treated as a right rather than a privilege, reaffirming the provincial government’s commitment to supporting students across both public and private sectors. Punjab has so far distributed free laptops to students in public sector universities, and the policy shift now brings private university students into the programme.

Under the revised criteria, students studying at private universities who have secured at least 65 percent marks will be eligible to apply for a free laptop. Officials said the initiative is aimed at strengthening digital learning, improving access to educational resources, and enhancing academic outcomes across the province’s higher education landscape.

Applications for the expanded scheme have been opened online, and eligible students can submit their details through the official portal at cmlaptophed.punjab.gov.pk.
