PTA Warns Against Illegal and False Content, Urges Responsible Use of Social Media

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) on Tuesday reiterated that responsible use of social media is a shared national responsibility, warning citizens against spreading illegal, hateful, defamatory or false content online.

In a press release, the telecom regulator stressed that misuse of digital platforms can damage the reputation of state institutions, the judiciary and individuals, and such actions are punishable under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA), 2016.

The authority urged social media users to exercise caution, verify information before sharing, and refrain from content that could incite hatred, misinformation or harm public trust. PTA noted that unchecked digital misconduct poses serious risks to social harmony and the credibility of Pakistan’s online ecosystem.

The regulator reaffirmed its commitment to promoting ethical digital engagement through awareness campaigns and educational initiatives. These efforts, PTA said, aim to empower citizens with knowledge, encourage accountability, and ensure that Pakistan’s digital space remains secure, responsible and conducive to constructive discourse.

Officials emphasized that fostering a safe and positive online environment is essential as Pakistan continues to expand its digital footprint and reliance on social media platforms for communication and information sharing.
