ISLAMABAD:
The National Assembly Standing Committee on Information Technology on Wednesday was briefed by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) on the imminent merger of two major telecom companies ahead of the upcoming 5G spectrum auction.
PTA Chairman told the committee that the merger is expected to be completed before the March 10 auction. “The integration of Ufone and Telenor is in its final stage,” he said, adding that the regulator is conducting a final review of all relevant documents.
Committee members emphasized that the merger should be structured to prevent monopolistic dominance in the telecom market. The PTA chairman noted that a market cap has been implemented to ensure fair competition.
“The merger will be executed in a way that maintains healthy competition and safeguards consumer interests,” he added, signaling a coordinated approach ahead of the 5G rollout.
