PTA Plans 5G Spectrum Auction in AJK, Gilgit-Baltistan After Nationwide Rollout

ISLAMABAD

Pakistan’s telecom regulator is preparing to expand next-generation connectivity to its northern regions, with plans underway to auction 5G spectrum in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) and Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) following the country’s initial rollout phase.

According to sources within the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), the process will begin with pilot testing of 5G services in AJK, marking the first step toward broader deployment in the region.

Officials indicated that the auction of 5G spectrum in both AJK and GB is expected to be completed within the next six months. The move comes as part of the government’s wider strategy to enhance digital infrastructure and bridge connectivity gaps in underserved areas.

Sources said the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication is likely to issue a formal policy directive on 5G within one to two weeks. Following this, the PTA will initiate the process of hiring a consultant to oversee the auction framework and implementation.

The Frequency Allocation Board (FAB) will take the final decision regarding the allocation of 5G bands, ensuring technical and regulatory alignment before the auction proceeds.

Major telecom operators, including Zong, Jazz and Ufone, are expected to participate in the bidding process, reflecting strong industry interest in expanding next-generation services to new markets.

Despite the logistical and regulatory considerations, officials maintained that the auction process in AJK and GB would not be prolonged. However, due to the distinct constitutional status of these regions, a separate mechanism for spectrum auction will be adopted.

The development signals Pakistan’s continued push toward nationwide 5G adoption, with authorities aiming to extend high-speed connectivity to remote and strategically significant areas in the coming months.
