PTA Launches Digital Assistant, Says Affordable 5G Phones Coming Soon

ISLAMABAD:

The chairman of the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority, Hafeez-ur-Rehman, announced that the telecom regulator has launched a digital assistant to help users register complaints and access information related to telecom services.

Speaking to reporters, the PTA chief acknowledged that quality of service remains a challenge in rural areas, mainly due to the limited number of telecom towers in remote regions.

He said the authority has introduced new mechanisms to improve service quality and ensure better connectivity for consumers across the country.

Rehman also clarified that the tax imposed on mobile phones is collected by the Federal Board of Revenue, not by the telecom regulator, noting that many complaints received by the PTA relate to device taxation.

Highlighting developments related to next-generation connectivity, the chairman said five companies have begun manufacturing 5G-enabled mobile handsets, which are expected to enter the market at affordable prices.

According to him, 5G smartphones priced between Rs. 40,000 and Rs. 45,000 will soon be available in Pakistan, potentially making the technology accessible to a wider segment of users.

He also assured that the software system being used for the upcoming 5G spectrum auction is fully secure, adding that a backup system has been prepared to ensure the process continues smoothly in case of any unforeseen situation during the bidding.
