5G Bids Open Until Feb 27 as PTA Sets $15 Million Entry Bar

Islamabad, Jan 21, 2026 — Pakistan’s telecom regulator has stepped up preparations for next-generation connectivity after the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) concluded a specialised capacity-building programme on 5G and fixed networks in collaboration with Huawei Pakistan, officials said on Tuesday.

The training, held at PTA headquarters in Islamabad, focused on emerging telecommunications technologies and regulatory frameworks critical to the rollout of advanced broadband services. Sessions covered 5G backhaul and transport, the evolution of radio access networks, core network digitalisation, fixed broadband technologies, and the expansion of digital service capabilities.

Chairman PTA Hafeez Ur Rehman said the initiative would strengthen the regulator’s ability to manage rapid technological change as Pakistan moves closer to introducing 5G services. He said enhanced institutional capacity was essential to ensure efficient regulation, spectrum management, and service quality in an increasingly complex telecom landscape.

Industry analysts say such initiatives reflect Pakistan’s broader push to modernise its digital infrastructure, with the government signalling that spectrum expansion and 5G deployment are approaching final stages. While Pakistan currently relies heavily on 4G mobile broadband, policymakers see 5G as a key enabler for digital services, smart infrastructure, and long-term economic growth.

PTA said it remains committed to continuous professional development through engagement with global technology partners, describing the programme as part of efforts to build a resilient regulatory ecosystem that can support Pakistan’s digital transformation.

Huawei Pakistan officials said collaboration with regulators was critical to ensuring that technological advances translate into secure, efficient, and inclusive connectivity as the country prepares for next-generation networks.
