The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) is set to generate $510 million (PKR 142 billion) from the first two rounds of the country’s historic 5G spectrum auction, PTA Chairman Major General (R) Hafeez ur Rehman said on Thursday.

He noted that the 480 MHz of spectrum auctioned on March 10 represents one of the largest spectrum sales globally. “The government has done its part; now it’s the telecom companies’ turn,” he added.

The chairman addressed concerns about internet disruptions, clarifying that in 2025, internet was suspended for 36 hours once, and that otherwise, there has been no nationwide shutdown. He added that limited internet closures may occur in some areas for security reasons.

On consumer pricing, Major General Rehman stated that mobile packages have increased only 10–15% over the past three years, and assured that 5G rollout will not cause a rise in package costs.

He highlighted that the new spectrum will boost internet speeds from 4 Mbps to 20 Mbps, further accelerating Pakistan’s Digital Pakistan vision.
