Islamabad:
The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has introduced measures to ensure that mobile SIMs of overseas Pakistanis remain active during their stay abroad, a move aimed at improving digital inclusion and strengthening ties between expatriates and the country.
According to PTA, SIMs registered in Pakistan will no longer be blocked solely due to prolonged overseas stay, provided users meet regulatory requirements. The initiative is designed to facilitate uninterrupted connectivity for overseas Pakistanis, enabling continued access to banking services, digital platforms, government portals and family communication.
The regulator said overseas Pakistanis can keep their SIMs active through international roaming services offered by local mobile operators. PTA also highlighted that biometric verification can be completed upon return to Pakistan if required under existing laws.
Officials said the step addresses long-standing complaints from expatriates whose SIMs were suspended due to inactivity, often causing difficulties in accessing mobile banking, one-time passwords (OTPs) and other essential digital services.
The authority advised users to maintain minimal usage, keep their SIMs registered in their own name and avoid misuse to ensure continued service. PTA reiterated that all measures remain aligned with national security regulations and existing telecom laws.
The development is being seen as part of the broader Digital Pakistan vision, which aims to provide inclusive, secure and citizen-centric digital services. Reliable mobile connectivity is considered a key pillar of the initiative, particularly for overseas Pakistanis who contribute significantly to the national economy through remittances.
By preventing unnecessary SIM deactivation, officials say the move will support digital continuity, improve trust in telecom services and enhance Pakistan’s digital ecosystem at a global level.
PTA said it remains committed to improving telecom accessibility and service quality while expanding digital connectivity in line with national priorities.
