Pakistan’s Ministry of Information Technology has launched the process to establish the country’s first National Artificial Intelligence (AI) Council, a key step toward implementing the National AI Policy 2025 under the Digital Pakistan Vision, officials said.
Most nominations for the council have already been received, while the remaining submissions will be completed shortly, according to the Ministry of IT. A formal notification is expected once the nomination process is finalized.
The AI Council will be responsible for overseeing the implementation of national AI policy, providing strategic direction, and guiding the allocation of resources from the National AI Fund, including ethical oversight of AI development and deployment.
The council will be chaired by the Federal Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunications. Its members will include the secretaries of the IT, Science and Technology, and Planning ministries, along with the chairpersons of the Higher Education Commission (HEC) and the Pakistan Development Authority.
Chief secretaries from all provinces, representatives from key sectors, and experts drawn from academia, industry, civil society, and citizens’ rights groups will also be part of the body, officials said.
Approved in 2025, Pakistan’s National AI Policy sets ambitious targets, including training 100,000 people in artificial intelligence by 2030 and awarding 3,000 postgraduate scholarships annually. The policy prioritizes the use of AI in critical sectors such as healthcare, agriculture, education, and governance.
Officials said the AI Council will monitor progress through a structured “master plan and action matrix,” aiming to ensure coordinated implementation and measurable outcomes as Pakistan seeks to accelerate its digital transformation.
