Pakistan has decided to fully digitise its passport and immigration system across the country, in a major step towards modernising public services and improving efficiency.

Officials said the nationwide digitisation drive aims to create a paperless system, enhancing transparency, reducing delays, and streamlining processes for citizens. The move is part of broader reforms within the passport and immigration department to upgrade service delivery.

Under the new system, advanced technologies including digital verification and automation will be introduced to strengthen security and prevent fraud in passport issuance. Authorities are also planning to integrate modern tools such as artificial intelligence to improve identity verification and minimise the risk of fake documents.

The overhaul is expected to significantly improve convenience for citizens, particularly overseas Pakistanis, by making passport applications and renewals faster and more user-friendly. Officials said the initiative will reduce reliance on manual processes and long queues at passport offices.

In recent months, the government has already introduced digital monitoring systems and online services to track passport applications in real time, signalling a shift towards technology-driven governance.

Authorities say the latest reforms will align Pakistan’s passport and immigration system with international standards, ensuring faster processing, improved security, and better public service delivery nationwide.
