NordVPN Rolls Out Android Call Protection to Combat Phone Scams

NordVPN has launched a new Android feature aimed at shielding users from rising phone scams, introducing real-time call protection that warns individuals about potentially fraudulent calls before they answer.

The feature is now available to Android users in the United States, the United Kingdom, the European Union, Japan, Norway, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Iceland, Australia, and Canada, marking a broad international rollout.

According to the company’s official statement, the system evaluates incoming phone numbers by analyzing multiple intelligence sources to assess their reputation. If a number is flagged as suspicious or linked to scam-related activity, users receive a warning message displayed alongside the caller ID — before the call is picked up — allowing them to make an informed decision.

The tool is integrated directly into the NordVPN Android application, meaning existing users are not required to download additional software. Notably, the call protection feature continues to function even when the VPN connection itself is switched off, expanding its usability beyond traditional browsing security.

However, access to the feature is limited to premium subscribers.

Activation requires only a few steps. Users must navigate to the “Threat Protection” section within the NordVPN Android app and enable the call protection toggle. The app then redirects users to their Android device settings to grant the necessary permissions. Once enabled, the app confirms activation and begins monitoring incoming calls automatically.

The rollout comes amid a global surge in phone-based fraud schemes, as cybersecurity firms and regulators intensify efforts to curb financial and identity-related scams. With this latest update, NordVPN is positioning itself beyond conventional VPN services, expanding into broader mobile threat detection and user protection tools.
