A fresh round of leaks from China suggests that the next generation of flagship Android smartphones could arrive with significantly higher price tags, signaling mounting pressure across the premium segment.
A well-known Chinese tipster, posting on Weibo, claims that the upcoming OnePlus 16, iQOO 16, and Redmi K100 Pro Max will all launch at a starting price of CNY 5,000 for the 12GB RAM and 256GB storage variant. At current exchange rates, that translates to roughly $725.
While the figure may appear moderate by global flagship standards, the context tells a sharper story. Smartphone pricing in China is typically lower than in Western markets, making the reported hike more pronounced when compared to last year’s models.
For reference, the OnePlus 15 and Redmi K90 Pro Max debuted at CNY 4,000, while the iQOO 15 launched at CNY 4,100. If the new pricing holds, consumers could face nearly a 20% increase year-on-year — a substantial jump in a market already grappling with softer demand and tighter margins.
All three devices are expected to debut in the second half of the year and are rumored to be powered by Qualcomm’s next flagship chipset, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6. Industry analysts suggest the new processor could carry higher procurement costs compared to its predecessor, reflecting ongoing semiconductor pricing pressures.
In addition, elevated memory costs — particularly in the DRAM segment — have compounded production expenses across the smartphone supply chain. Manufacturers, historically reluctant to absorb such increases, are more likely to pass them on to end users.
Should domestic prices rise in China, global markets may not remain insulated. International variants of the OnePlus 16 and iQOO 16 could mirror similar adjustments, further tightening competition in the premium Android space.
For now, the claims remain unverified. But if accurate, the next flagship cycle may test consumers’ willingness to pay more for incremental performance gains.
