ISLAMABAD:
Pakistan’s national cyber watchdog has issued a high-level advisory warning that state-sponsored actors are increasingly targeting supply chains to infiltrate and disrupt critical national infrastructure.
In its latest alert, National CERT cautioned that adversaries could exploit vulnerabilities in hardware and software logistics to compromise key sectors, including power grids, banking systems, and defense networks.
The advisory highlights a growing shift in cyber warfare tactics, where attackers are no longer limited to breaching networks but are infiltrating manufacturing and delivery processes of trusted vendors. Even minor lapses during hardware shipment or software updates, it warned, could trigger large-scale system failures.
Authorities stressed that unverified software updates may introduce hidden backdoors into national systems, while vendors with undisclosed ownership structures could pose significant security risks. Institutions have been urged to treat all incoming hardware as potentially compromised until thoroughly vetted.
The agency also called for the adoption of a “zero-trust” security model, directing organizations to verify every device before connecting it to networks and to implement strict monitoring of unusual system behaviour or suspicious data traffic.
According to the advisory, a single compromised supplier could lead to cascading failures across multiple sectors, potentially paralysing essential services. It further warned that modern cyber espionage has extended into logistics and manufacturing stages, enabling large-scale surveillance and sabotage.
National CERT has advised the use of tamper-proof logistics, GPS tracking for sensitive equipment, and sandbox testing of all software updates prior to deployment, alongside enhanced scrutiny of vendor ownership and supply chain transparency.
The warning underscores growing concerns that neglecting supply chain security could leave national infrastructure vulnerable to covert infiltration, with potentially catastrophic consequences for state security and public trust.
